Intervista a Matt Pahl (The Floor)

Over the wall blog:
Introduciti e dicci qualcosa sui The Floor.

Matt Pahl: Siamo tutti ( riferito ai The Floor) cresciuti a Edmonton, Canada.
Eravamo addentro a molto materiale post punk, e pop anni ottanta.
Ci siamo sciolti l'anno scorso dopo  un smash up in stile Who sul palco.

Original Version (English)
Some years ago I listened to "Personell" (2005), the debut album of The Floor, a canadian post- punk band. They are underrated and forgotten, it is such a shame. If you don't know the Floor, don't worry, now you have the chance to know them. I interviewed Matt Pahl, the singer and of the band.

Over the wall blog:
It's a great luck to have an opportunity to interview you, Matt  (guitar, vocals of The Floor). Thanks for the attention and let's start from the beginning. Please introduce yourself and say a few words about The Floor.

Matt Pahl: We all grew up in Edmonton, Canada. Sadly, very much a Nickelback kind of place, by and large.
2001: I was 23 & I just finished a Slowdive-inspired album called Lost in a Silver Screen. Nobody really picked up on it, except for a company in the states called Clairecords who sold a few copies for me. Obviously not a popular sound in N. America, though.
Determined, I assembled a band to do that sort of stuff live - My bloody valentine / ride / swervedriver - late 80's / early 90's Creation records "shoegazer" atmospheric type stuff. You know - lots of effects pedals - strobe lights, hair in our eyes, surf guitars etc.

But months later we ended up with a feedbacky JAMC-influenced sound that eventually quieted down more to an aggressive Bunnymen sound. We started using an old analog keyboard to do Joy Division / Cure type stuff - and New Order, the Chameleons, Gang of 4, The Sound, early U2 and then occasionally Duran Duran or Killing Joke depending on our mood. We were seriously into a lot of that post punk stuff, but also a lot of 80's pop.
O: Of course, your main influence was probably british post-punk, but I'm curious, I want to know if there are other musical influences.
M.P. : I'm into all sorts of stuff - anything with conviction & strong melodies. I also like a lot of 60's blues stuff, punk rock and old time radio pop.
O: Why did The Floor break up?
M.P :The Floor broke up because we weren't getting anywhere really - living & touring in the relatively unpopulated, expansive, unforgiving wastelands of North America, playing old Euro-pastiche music, mostly to people with no clue or taste for it. Many unsuccessful tours, bad breaks, dissatisfaction with our effort level vs. payoff etc. The usual stuff for bands motivated for the sake of art over commerce.

We'd started as The Floor in 2002 & by mid-2005, artistically we felt we'd leveled out too. I felt we'd begun repeating ourselves when writing new material.

I also begun resenting the dark persona I had to immerse myself in order to sing our stuff convincingly. This "Floor side" of my personality began to seriously overtake me in a depressing way, and I needed a way out. I am actually a pretty fun and happy go lucky type of guy. I am really goofy actually, and it's hard to believe I even did that insanely self-serious stuff. Looking back - I'm still proud of most of it though...

Anyway - I figured it was best to end it when we were at the peak of our popularity - relative popularity, if you will. And we wanted to keep our friendships intact above all else.
O:What did you do after the closing of The Floor? Were you into any other music or art music experience?
M.P. :2006 - in Edmonton - I played guitar in a band called Columbus - a 60's pop art type thing with a Cliff and the Shadows style & Blur / Smiths type guitars thrown in.
2007 - I moved south to Calgary & sang and played guitar in Heat Ray, which was terrible, but it had some nice & noisy Dinosaur Jr. type moments occasionally. We split last year after a Who-style smash up on stage.
I like to shake things up and try new things every couple of years. Last month, Paul (bassist from the Floor) and I played together in a Motorhead tribute band for Halloween. It was too much fun.
We're together again working on stuff right now for a Ramones / lounge-singer vocals type thing called the allovers. Wish us luck!
